His name is uttered wistfully, dreamily, with reverence: „Dries,” they murmur. His Paris store is a requisite stop for every editor and buyer during Paris fashion week. Why? It has something to do with Van Noten’s singular style—it never looks like anyone else’s designs and it always looks innately confident and cool.So it was no surprise at all that everyone who’s anyone in the industry turned out for last night’s preview of „Dries Van Noten: Inspirations” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, hosted by Barneys New York. (Barneys was the first American retailer to carry Van Noten’s designs.)A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy, Van Noten launched his own label in 1986 to immediate success. Nearly 30 years designing is nothing to sniff at, but Van Noten himself thinks it’s too soon for a retrospective. „I think I’m too young and too busy to do a retrospective,” he says in a video about the exhibition on his own website. „It’s really about my inspiration, how I work. I hope that most people go for the relation between the clothes and the works of art.”Related: H&M Shows Off Its Parisian SpiritThe exhibition, the first ever dedicated to the Belgian designer, showcases his varied inspirations and sheds light on his creative process. Over 200 pieces of Van Noten’s work are on display www.canada-goose-outlet.biz , alongside vintage dresses from Dior and Schiaparelli and works of art by masters like Bronzino, Kees van Dongen, Victor Vasarely and Damien Hirst. „It’s not that I want to say my clothes are art canada-goose-outlet.biz ,” Van Noten says. „But it’s nice to see that fashion is just more than pretty clothes.” Seeing a collection of the designer’s floral print dresses beside an embellished Dior dress from the ’50s, or a gothic style dress next to a clip from The Piano helps make sense of the designer’s work.
